Some Highlights of Museum Arnhem Modern Art Design

Carel Willink’s “Château en Espagne” (1939)
Known for his precise and surreal style, Willink presents in this work a haunting, almost cinematic landscape dominated by a dark and brooding sky filled with ominous clouds. The composition centers on a dilapidated villa or château, whose crumbling architecture evokes a sense of decay and abandonment. Nearby stands a classical statue of Apollo, symbolizing perhaps the persistence of art and culture amid destruction. The painting’s atmosphere is tense and melancholic, intensified by the contrast between the ruined human structures and the enduring statue, set beneath the turbulent heavens. This interplay creates a surreal, dreamlike environment that blends realism with symbolic undertones.

“Wilma with Cat” (1940)
A portrait painting that depicts a woman named Wilma seated calmly with a cat resting on her lap or nearby. Created in 1940, the artwork captures a quiet, domestic moment, emphasizing warmth, companionship, and introspection. The style and mood likely reflect the artistic trends of the era, possibly influenced by realism or early modernism.

"Museum of Memory" (April–August 2024)
A feature-length documentary (100 minutes) written, directed, and produced by Kola Tubosun, and filmed by Tunde Kelani. It centers on Ebrohimie Road at the University of Ibadan—Wole Soyinka’s residence from 1967–1972—where he was arrested in 1967 during the Biafran Civil War and returned in 1969 after his release. The film explores this location’s significance in Soyinka’s life and political journey. Premiering in July 2024 in Nigeria to honor Soyinka’s 90th birthday, it has since been shown internationally in the US, UK, and other countries.
